The Singing-Circle

Why a Singing-Circle

The Singing-Circles offer a welcoming space for connection, joy, and ease for seniors living with brain-related challenges, including memory-related changes, language challenges such as Aphasia, Parkinson’s disease or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as for those in recovery or rehabilitation.

Led by Maartje de Lint or one of her trained Care-Singers, and supported by a pianist and a dedicated team of volunteers, each session creates a warm, safe, and structured environment in which singing together plays a central role.

Within this setting, participants are gently invited to engage at their own pace. Singing supports relaxation, stimulates memory, and fosters moments of connection and recognition — creating meaningful shared experiences for participants and those around them.

The Echo of Joy in the circle

Within a Singing-Circle, a unique form of interaction emerges: joy is shared and reflected, moving naturally between participants. This “reflected joy” strengthens self-confidence, invites participation, and helps to gently overcome mental and physical barriers.

Through this social, emotional, and musical interplay, meaningful moments arise — enriching quality of life for participants and those around them.

Singing together activates auditory memory and engages brain networks involved in emotion, language, and movement. Memories are reawakened, stories come alive, and connections — both with others and within oneself — can be experienced again. Research shows that singing helps reduce tension, supports emotional balance, and contributes to overall well-being and cognitive resilience.

“My wife and I have been attending ‘In mir singt ein Lied’ (A Song Sings Within Me) in Leipzig for years. She never forgets when it’s time to go — the memory is so strong. Even on days when she doesn’t feel well, she still wants to be there. She says, ‘In mir singt ein Lied — it’s simply my club.’”
